Fear of flying – Hypnosis can help!

Fear of flying Hypnosis Kent
I don’t know how many times I have walked through an airport and seen people sitting at the airport bar, all alone, and guzzling down large pints of wine beer or spirits…. before midday!!
As a therapist I am always interested in people and why they do the things they do, and clearly downing a pint of wine at 10 o’clock in the morning before you are about to board a flight is NOT a normal thing to do.
So then I start wondering …why is that person sitting at the bar alone drinking so heavily at this time of the morning?
Now , maybe it is just me, maybe I am just nosy. I suspect a lot of people would think so as I glance curiously not once, but twice, at the man with the extra large wine in front of him. But I then need to start to reason out why that man may be sitting staring into that large wine glass at ten o’clock in the morning .
Get on with your own life I might hear some people say, it’s really nothing to do with you, and to be honest, not that interesting!
But you see, I have the mind of a therapist, the mind of a psychologist, which means I have a probing and inquisitive mind ,and the innate need to know why people do the things they do, and a desire to help those people that are suffering psychologically. Even perfect strangers.
I am one of those people that cannot walk past the crying child that has lost his mother, I cannot drive past the dog running in the road, and I cannot watch someone in psychological distress . So this is why I am so nosy. Or that is what I like to tell myself and my other half (when he reprimands me for staring when I didn’t even realise I was!)
Anyway…enough about me…back to the man at the bar.. and to be honest the story really is quite boring .
Because there are a few reasons why that man could be sitting at the bar getting slowly drunk.
- He is purely and simply an alcoholic
- His body is on a different time zone and it is actually his night time – (it’s quite often the case that night shift workers have alcohol in the morning when they get in from work )
- He isn’t an alcoholic but just fancied a glass of wine early in the morning
- He has just said a painful goodbye to someone and a glass of wine has made him feel better (I would still be raising my eyebrows and wondering if there was not some kind of alcohol dependency to deal with emotions here…. Nevertheless…I digress)
The last and final reason and the reason why a lot of people drink copious amounts of alcohol before they board a flight is because they have a terrible fear of flying!!
Sitting at the bar, their hands are sweating ,their heart beat is accelerated , their breathing is fast and shallow, and they can hear their own heartbeat thudding in their ears. Time seems to have slowed down and they may even be trembling. They are experiencing a panic attack at the thought of boarding that flight. They have managed to get to this point, got through customs and security, dropped off their cases, and now they are through they are through. They HAVE to get on that flight now. But knowing this only increases the anxiety they feel. So they stop and have a drink in an attempt to calm their nerves. What does this do? It only increases the anxiety as once the alcohol wears off they are left feeling even worse than before they had a drink.
Unfortunately, this is a coping mechanism for a lot of people that have a fear of flying .
Other people take sleeping tablets to try and get through a flight. Unfortunately this does not always work either, One client relayed a story where he boarded a flight, swallowed two Sominex in the hope he would pass out. Two hours later he was still wide awake, still terrified , and had drank four whiskeys to try and calm his nerves. In desperation he took another two Sominex ,but still sat through the entire flight bolt upright in terror. Unfortunately for him the Sominex and the whiskey kicked in when he arrived at his destination and he was unable to continue with the rest of the journey home as he couldn’t manage to keep awake let alone drive himself home . He had to sleep in his car until he was capable of driving. This gives an idea of the kind of anxiety people can face when they have a fear of flying .
Now, if only that man at the bar, or that man that had taken the sleeping tablets had decided to see a hypnotherapist to help deal with the anxiety that comes with the fear of flying ,BEFORE they had gone to the airport. A hypnotherapist would have desensitized the fear trigger in the amygdala, (A little walnut like shape piece of the brain where fear triggers are stored),and a good hypnotherapist would have taught self hypnosis techniques to reduce anxiety. With this powerful combination of hypnotic techniques that man would have been strolling through the airport and boarding that plane without any of the anxieties he had previously suffered .
